— I have chosen a capulana that was gifted to me by a female member of my maternal family.
This object connects me to my African heritage, my experiences and upbringing and is a link between different generations.
The capulana is used in different ways: as a cover on the table during family celebrations and get-togethers, a bedding piece, clothing, to secure babies and toddlers on women' backs while working, and it is a significant symbol of care within the women in my family.
This piece of cloth is so much more than just a piece of cotton. My capulana carries feelings, stories, emotions and memories from past , present, and is a comfort that I will keep and treasure while I move forward into my still unknown future.
